Apicoectomy
The specialized solution for persistent problems at the root of the tooth.
What Is an Apicoectomy?
An apicoectomy is a surgical procedure in which the oral and maxillofacial surgeon opens the gum tissue to access and treat an inflammation at the root tip of a tooth. The infected tissue and a small portion of the root are removed.
Procedure and Materials
During the procedure, a special material called Mineral Trioxide Aggregate (MTA) is applied to the root tip. This material seals the root end hermetically, preventing further infection and encouraging bone regeneration. MTA has been proven through extensive research to be highly biocompatible and integrates smoothly with the tooth, bone, and surrounding gum tissue.
When Is an Apicoectomy Necessary?
This procedure becomes necessary when symptoms persist after a root canal treatment, or when the root canal is too narrow due to calcification, making thorough cleaning and sealing impossible. In some cases, despite successful initial treatment, the tooth may continue to show issues such as pain or infection. In such situations, an apicoectomy may be the best solution to preserve the natural tooth.
Is the Procedure Painful?
An apicoectomy is performed under local anesthesia, making it entirely painless. Any mild discomfort afterward can be easily managed with over-the-counter painkillers and should not be a cause for concern.
In summary, an apicoectomy is a crucial surgical procedure aimed at saving the natural tooth and reducing the need for more invasive treatments or extraction.
