Periodontitis Treatment
Gum inflammation can be prevented and treated — with the right care, at the right time.
Periodontitis: What It Is and What Its Consequences Are
Periodontitis is an inflammatory disease of the periodontal tissues that support the teeth, including the gums, jawbone, root cementum, and periodontal ligament. It is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults, but with timely diagnosis and treatment, it can be effectively managed.
Symptoms and Diagnosis
Key symptoms include easy gum bleeding, red or swollen gums, gum recession, bad breath, pus discharge, and loosening or shifting of teeth. Diagnosis is performed by a dentist through clinical examination and X-rays.
Consequences and Complications
Without treatment, periodontitis can lead to severe bone destruction and eventual tooth loss. It has also been linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular problems, diabetes, preterm birth, and morbid obesity.
Treatment
Treatment involves removing plaque and tartar using specialized tools or laser therapy where possible, targeting bacteria beneath the gums. Maintaining excellent oral hygiene and attending regular check-ups is critical to the success of the treatment.
Prevention and Long-Term Management
Good oral hygiene and regular professional cleanings are essential for preventing periodontitis and maintaining long-term treatment success.
